We’ve all made financial mistakes in the past. Unfortunately, there’s nothing that can be done about the past.
The key is to move on. Don’t let your past mistakes continue to cause damage in the future. Too many people feel defeated by their past mistakes, and they give up or feel like it’s too late.
Instead, forgive yourself for mistakes from the past and let it go. Determine that you’re going to change things in the future. This can have a powerful impact on your mindset and positive results will follow.
2. Take Control
We’re all responsible for our own finances. We can’t make excuses or blame other people or situations.
Take control of your finances and realize that no one else is going to have the same responsibility that you have for your own finances.
Part of taking control involves recognizing the areas where you need to improve. Do you need to pay off debt? Do you need to do a better job with saving and investing? Do you have a particular weakness that is hurting your finances?
3. Find Inspiration
Inspiration and motivation can play a huge role in getting the right mindset. You need to surround yourself with positivity if you want to have a good financial mindset.
There are several ways that this comes into play in your life. One of the most significant ways is through the people that you spend time with. Choose to spend time with people who are positive and uplifting rather than negative.

4. Set Goals
Financial goals will give you a purpose or direction for the way that you manage money. Goals are important because without them, it’s easy to lose focus and get distracted.

When you’re focused on saving money or living frugally, it’s easy to get obsessed and try to cut back on everything. The truth is, you don’t need to cut back and live on the bare minimum in every area of your life.
The key is to identify your priorities. We all have different priorities, so it’s important to look at your own life and determine what matters to you.
Once you know your priorities, cut back in other areas, but be willing to spend money on the things that matter the most for you.
For example, clothes are not important to me, so I spend as little as possible on clothes. But travel and experiences with my family are more important. I save money on the things that aren’t my priorities so I have money to spend on the things that matter the most to me, like a family vacation.

Your level of financial competency will impact your mindset. The knowledge you have, the more comfortable you’ll feel with how you are managing your money.

7. Don’t Expect Perfection
Even though you’re improving your financial IQ, you’re still going to make some mistakes. Unfortunately, mistakes are a part of life. Don’t expect yourself to be perfect and you won’t be so hard on yourself when you make a mistake.
8. Be Generous
If you really want to improve your money mindset, make it a habit to give to others. There is nothing like giving and being generous to help you put money into the proper perspective and to feel good about what you’re able to do with your money. Find some causes that are meaningful to you, and support them whenever you can.
9. Talk About Money
For some reason, money is a subject that is often taboo. Talking about money with friends and family can be helpful if you’re talking to others who have a healthy financial mindset.
My advice is to find a few friends or family members who you respect, and start talking with them about money. You can learn a lot from other people, and it’s healthy to have some people you trust that you can talk to.
I have a friend that, like me, is an entrepreneur. We talk a lot of business and trying to make money. I have another friend that shares my love of finding deals and saving money. We’ll often tell each other about websites and apps through referral programs so we can each get deals.
10. Push Yourself
Achieving the financial goals that you set will not be easy. Most people take the easy route, which leads to debt and poor overall financial health. If you want something better, you’ll need to push yourself. Be ready to get out of your comfort zone and be willing to make some sacrifices in order to get to where you want to be.
