But hiring is vital, and that means that you need to do what you can to tighten up your hiring process so that the right person comes on board.
And you don’t have to spend too much money to make sure that they are the right person. - Get people on board from the beginning. If you are hiring into your team, you need to make sure that you have the opinions of the whole team on board and you are taking these into account before you say yes to a new hire. This is the whole reason behind multiple interviews and group interview situations. If the whole team, especially if it’s a small team, can agree on the person that is being hired, you’re going to find it much easier to onboard the new person and help them to settle in. Before you interview anybody, make sure that you ask the team what they’re looking for before you hire.
- Make sure that the new job is a viable one. Are you hiring because you have a need, or are you hiring because you want to fill some seats in your office? You don’t want to waste your time, effort, and money hiring somebody who’s not going to really fit in, so make a point of ensuring that you have the correct alignment and you have a viable position for them to slot into.
- Work up a process. It’s important that you have a process for your hiring so that when you get started, you know exactly what you’re doing.Do you have your timelines down pat? Do you know who you’re looking for and which job boards you should be looking at? Do you have a dedicated HR representative or recruiter on board to do the hiring for you, or will you have to take your time out of your day to do it? These are important questions because you need to know what the basic processes are for hiring so that you can stick to them.
